Why You Should Be Looking At Your Feet Daily

Why You Should Be Looking At Your Feet Daily

Let’s be honest – when was the last time you looked at your feet?

Visual inspection can alert you to upcoming complications. It is recommended you make a visual inspection of your feet once a daily. Put a small mirror on the floor if it is difficult to see the soles of your feet.

As you perform your inspection you want to be aware of redness over bony prominences. Redness is an indication of friction and rubbing which may necessitate a change in shoes, padding, or surgical correction of severe deformities.

Also, keep a mental inventory of all moles and dark spots in your skin. If you feel a spot is growing or just doesn’t look right, you should make an appointment with your podiatrist or dermatologist.

Ivan R. Bristow and colleagues published an article in the journal of foot and ankle research which found legs and feet account for 30% of primary skin melanomas. If these lesions are found early the prognosis is favorable. Many of the melanomas in the foot are found on the sole or in the nails which lead to late diagnosis and poor prognosis.
